Merino Comfort Hiker

Merino Comfort Hiker

by Wigwam

This Ain’t Your Grandfather’s Wool Sock

If you've never tried a merino wool sock, you've been missing out. Unlike traditional wool socks, merino wool socks are luxuriously soft and comfortable. The yarn is amazingly soft and comfortable, not itchy.

Merino wool provides insulation from hot and cold allowing it to be worn in any kind of weather. It is a temperature regulator and moisture moving fiber that allows your feet to stay comfortable and dry all day long. Merino wool efficiently wicks moisture away from your feet, keeping them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The added nylon and spandex give this sock a snug fit and long-lasting quality. Shrink-treated to maintain shape and size after machine washing/drying.

Designed for everyday use. The Wigwam Merino Comfort Hiker can be your daily driver in all four seasons and for every kind of weather. It performs in hot, cold, wet, or dry conditions. Give it a test drive and see for yourself.

Merino wool softness. Foot hugging, Cushiony all over. Seamless toe closure. Stay put leg and top. Formerly known as Merino Wool Comfort Hiker.

67% Merino Wool, 21% Stretch Nylon, 7% Elastic (rubber), 5% Acrylic

This sock is proudly made by Wigwam in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA.

Sock Features

Hover over the highlighted areas below to learn about the special features of this sock.

Welt Cuff
This sock features a welt-cuff. A welt-cuff is a double layer of knit fabric. This is an attractive and durable cuff that will not stretch out.
The leg of this sock is a crew length so it comes to the lower part or just below the calf. This sock features comfortable terry loop construction on the entire leg. This also provides additional warm comfort in cooler weather.
Top of Foot (Instep)
The top of the foot is made of the same merino wool terry loop. Unlike some of our socks, this sock is cushioned throughout the foot, not just on the sole.
The heel is made of the same terry loop as the sole and the arch of the foot. There is no transition of materials.
This closure is stitched loop-for-loop on the knitting machine that produces a seamless closure on the inside and outside of the sock. This reduces blisters caused by bunched up sock material.
Bottom of Foot (Sole)
The sole is made with merino wool terry loop. This loop provides cushioning and has a very soft feel. This sole is medium to heavy cushioned.

Crew Length Crew Length: This sock measures 29.0 cm (11.4 in) in length. The Merino Comfort Hiker will ride just below the calf. It may come up the calf on shorter legs. At 29.0 cm, this measures to an average length for a crew sock.

This sock fits true to size. With the terry loop cushioning on the entire foot of the sock (terry loop on the top and bottom of foot), this sock is one of our more comfortable but slightly more bulky hiking socks.

This sock is constructed with a high merino wool content. The terry loop construction on the inside is 100% merino wool yarn. This means that while the sock itself isn't 100% merino wool, the part that is touching your foot is all merino. The outside of the sock, and the top cuff is where most of the other materials are located. These synthetic materials give the sock its stretch and longer wear.

Sockspert Opinions

John's Thoughts

This is probably the most popular "starter sock" for people interested in merino wool socks. It is priced very reasonably and is a very versatile sock that can be worn any month of the year. If you haven't worn a merino wool sock before, this is a great place to start. It is also one of most popular gift socks.

This sock has comfortable terry loop (bath towels have terry loop) inside the whole sock, not just under your foot. That includes the leg. The terry loop makes the sock extremely comfortable, however it also makes it a little warm for my taste in very warm weather. For warmer weather, I do prefer the Comfort Hiker Lite.

Q. The sock seems a little heavy. Do you recommend it as a summer hiking sock?
A. You are correct, the sock is a little heavy compared with our other hiking socks. The terry loop weave that gives the sock its cushion and softness also creates an insulation layer that will keep your feet a little warmer. For hot weather we would recommend something lighter, such as the Wigwam Merino/Silk Nomad, the Wigwam Merino Comfort Hiker Lite or the the Wigwam Merino Lite Hiker.
