They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To... Now They’re Better!

The Big Brother of the Merino Comfort Hiker, this heavyweight sock is made for cold weather comfort. Great for winter hiking, hunting, and outdoor activities.

If you have not tried a Merino wool sock, you might think that these socks are just going to be another pair of itchy socks that shrink when you wash them. That’s not the case here. Unlike traditional wool socks, merino wool socks are luxuriously soft and comfortable, not itchy.

Merino wool provides insulation from hot and cold allowing it to be worn in any kind of weather. It is a temperature regulator and moisture moving fiber that allows your feet to stay comfortable and dry all day long. The added nylon and spandex give this sock a snug fit and long-lasting quality. Shrink-treated to maintain shape and size after machine washing/drying.

Foot hugging fit. Extra cushiony all over. Stay put leg and top. Seamless toe closure. Thick and warm, Merino wool softness. Formerly known as Wigwam Blue Ox.

70% Merino Wool, 24% Stretch Nylon, 6% Elastic

This sock is proudly made by Wigwam in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA.

Sock Features

Hover over the highlighted areas below to learn about the special features of this sock.

Welt Cuff
This sock features a welt-cuff. A welt-cuff is a double layer of knit fabric. This is an attractive and durable cuff that will not stretch out.
The leg of this sock is a crew length so it comes to the lower part or just below the calf. This sock features thick comfortable terry loop construction on the entire leg. This also provides additional warm comfort in cooler weather.
Top of Foot (Instep)
The top of the foot is made of thick merino wool terry loop. Unlike some of our socks, this sock is cushioned throughout the foot, not just on the sole.
The heel is made of the same terry loop as the sole and the arch of the foot. There is no transition of materials.
This closure is stitched loop-for-loop on the knitting machine that produces a seamless closure on the inside and outside of the sock. This reduces blisters caused by bunched up sock material.
Bottom of Foot (Sole)
The sole is made with thick merino wool terry loop. This loop provides cushioning and has a very soft feel. This sole is heavily cushioned.

Crew Length Crew Length: This sock measures 28.0 cm (11.0 in) in length. This is an average to longer crew length. It will come up to roughly the base of your calf or slightly above.

With a foot hugging fit and lots of terry loop cushioning, this is a sock meant for larger boots. It is thick enough to effect the fit if worn with shoes.

This sock is constructed with a very high merino wool content. The terry loop construction on the inside is 100% merino wool yarn. This means that while the sock itself isn't 100% merino wool, the part that is touching your foot is all merino. The outside of the sock, and the top cuff is where most of the other materials are located. These synthetic materials give the sock its stretch and longer wear.

Sockspert Opinions

John's Thoughts

The smart product naming people at Wigwam undoubtedly named this sock The Blue Ox after the famous Babe The Blue Ox of Paul Bunyan fame. The name really conveys the rugged warmth that this sock provides. This sock is quite thick to provide the warmth that a lumberjack would have needed over 100 years ago.

Things have changed in the last 100 years and this sock is no exception. Instead being of made of scratchy wool, this sock is made of 70% merino wool, a very high quality itch free wool. Merino wool feels great on your feet and 100% of what your foot is going to feel is merino wool. From the toe to the top of the sock, the inside is nothing but merino wool loop. The other 30% of this sock is nylon and elastic to provide durability and stretch.

On a side note, lumberjacks are now called loggers. If you want to sound like a real city slicker, just call a logger a lumberjack. I once referred to my brother-in-law's profession as a lumberjack. Like lumberjacks of yesteryear, today's loggers are a pretty tough bunch. Fortunately for me, he let my transgression slide.

Update: The smarty pants naming people have done it to me again. After writing about the Blue Ox, they now changed the name of the sock to the Wigwam Merino Comfort Explorer. Now my brother-in-law logger story doesn't fit. In my mind the sock is still the same great sock, and if you ask me about it, I'm still going to call it The Blue Ox.

Q. Is this your thickest and warmest merino wool sock?
A. Yes, it is our thickest and warmest merino wool sock. Because merino wool is more expensive, most outdoor socks of this thickness are not merino. This sock is 70% merino. This is a very warm and comfortable sock.
