John's Description

I remember my first trip to the Boundary Waters on the Minnesota/Canada border. I packed up everything I thought I needed. One of the many things I packed were my liner socks. Back then, in the “old days” of sock technology the idea was to have a sock liner, this liner would wick the moisture way from your foot and your outer sock would retain the moisture (or something like that). Many things have changed since those first days for me. First, I no longer bring a separate liner and socks. Second, I don’t bring a cooler, fresh fruit or a variety of pans with me. The Boundary Waters is no place for bringing extra junk. I now have a rule that everyone must be able to put everything for the week in their backpack (paddles, fishing poles and life vest excluded). Keep in mind, the Boundary Waters is a lake area where you must portage between lakes. Some portages can be over a mile long through very rugged terrain (mud, rocks, standing water, hills, skeeters).

While it may seem like a small difference, the idea of a built in liner sock is actually rather interesting. Instead of wearing 2 socks, the Wigwam Camp Fusion combines the two into one sock. Not only do you only need to worry about finding two pairs of socks in your bag, but you don’t have to worry about your two socks sliding around in your boot. It isn’t just a combination of materials like many socks, the knit of the liner is on the inside while the outer sock does the rest. Your shoe touches the outer part. In the Wigwam Camp Fusion the sock liner is 100% Olefin, a wicking man made material. The outer sock is a combination of 55% merino wool, 25% Stretch Nylon, 17% Olefin, and 3% Lycra Spandex.

This sock has a snug firm feel. Some socks have a loosey goosey feel and can bunch up in your boot. This sock is not loose at all. In fact, the longer length and firm stretch make this sock more time consuming to put on. You can't just pull from the top of the sock and expect it to slide all the way past your foot and up your leg (not that you should put your sock on that way). If you have massive calves, the mid-calf length may seem tight as the sock ends at the meatiest part of your calf. My calves are not especially meaty so these fit great.

Overall, this is a great boot sock in cooler weather. I expect this sock to last me almost forever as it has a very durable feel.
